Oh, yes. I found out recently that I like to cut my hair. Usually, I'm too scared that I'll mess up (because I never take my time, and try cutting right away).
So, I just started trimming my hair, at first...Then I thought I wanted shorter side bangs that my aunt's hairdresser gave me...Then I decided she didn't do too well on my layers, either. Hmm, maybe my hair just grows REALLY fast? But then again, I did only get it cut 2 weeks ago...
But it grows fast anyway, yay! I think I might cut it short this summer...we'll see !

Memorial Day Weekend + TBGuild: madonnaontherocks

My weekend is going on pretty dang amazing. I went to Busch Gardens yesterday with some friends, and the lines were amazingly short (well, most of the time we rode them.) We got on all the rides before 3, I believe - except for Big Bad Wolf, cause that's kinda lame... haha
Anyway, I'll be making my friend's prom dress soon! (As in probably tonight and tomorrow)

Saturday Sewing Madness !

My friend talked of a tuxedo dress for her prom.
Another friend talked about being the guy for prom.
I decided to do something with that.

I had an old tuxedo shirt from middle school orchestra (high school orchestras get "nice" black funeral gear!)
I found a formless dress in the thrift store for $2.99

I cut the collar and part of the pintucking & buttons off for the top.
Cut the rest of the pintucking part for the waist.
Cut the button part for the back.
Then, just cut the dress up for the boobage area and skirt!

Voila!

I think it's the houndstooth alternating pink and white... instead of being one color

I found 4 yards of pink houndstooth fabric for about $3.99 at my thrift store
I used less than a yard for this =]

I need to fix some stuff, clean up my seams, and hopefully get it on etsy!

Anyway, it's 2 am. I need sleep.

Valentine's Day + President's Day...

I had a rocky weekend. I was sick most of the weekend; stress-sick. I'm starting to get annoyed by the buttload of stuff I have to do/learn/make/understand in school. But whatever...

For Valentine's Day, me and my boyfriend agreed on no presents. So I made myself a cute top to wear for him...and I bought him a handmade card =] His mom ended up making him get me something, so I got a HUGE teddy bear !
Anyway, here's a blurry picture of the top I made. It was originally meant to be a dress, but it ended up too short, so I scrunched it up =]

Our date was amazing! We went to the movies and saw Push (good movie, by the way). Then we went and ate ice cream at Coldstone (well, I did...). Then we waited in line at Cogan's Pizza and got seated fairly quickly (especially for Valentine's Day!). We had the Meatzilla pizza, like always. Yummyyyy =]

Oh, right. Back to sewing.

Sunday, I made two skirts in 3 hours. A bubble skirt (1 hour) and a high waisted skirt. Why did the high waisted skirt take so long, you ask ? Oh, I don't know....the zipper maybe? (Oh, how i hate zippers).
Okay, I lied....It took long cause, being out of it from stressing out so much, I sewed the waist band to the actual skirt backwards. I don't own a seam ripper, and the wool blend (or whatever type of fabric it truly is) likes to fray a lot. Careful seam ripping = lots of time.

Bubble skirts are fun to wear !

The adventures of sewing a dress

I finally got the fabric I ordered from etsy (shipped from Canada!)
Soooo I looked, I searched, I thought, I designed!

I asked my cousin for tape, and she gave me artist's tape (oh, yay! Fashion = art!) so I tried to do what they do on project runway...

Then I pinned and cut, cut and pinned...
I definitely had to make changes along the way
But look! The stitching is GREAT! (If you've seen the insides of my earlier stuff, wheww, not good!)

I keep forgetting that when I pin, it has to be inside out...
So it's now mirrored!

Woes of sewing a dress:
I haven't finished. After 3 hours, I spent 1.5 hours cutting and sewing...And 1.5 hrs for the zipper. I hate zippers. Tomorrow, I shall finish!

Oh yes, For Christmas, I got a dressform. Of course, it was ordered on Christmas Eve, so I got it the day after New Year's. I only got to work on it during that weekend, because I started school again =[

This is what I call a failure...
I call it that because it was meant to have a zipper in the middle, with all these other elements that I didn't get to use. The zipper was the wrong kind, so I had to take that off, and the edges didn't line up, so I tried to make it look like I meant to do it...

This one was also a failure. I attempted to practice draping, and the back had this whole intricate (but not really) look to it. Well, while I was sewing it, I sewed through the fabric...So, when I was ripping the seams, BAM! hole on the fabric. So I had to cut the idea off (literally) and leave it as a halter.

This is the ONLY thing I didn't mess up on. It's my favorite thing I've made to date, and I actually love it. Sadly, I have too much boobs to wear it (plus, I need money for my Europe trip) SO....Off to selling it to someone that'll love it!

Ahh, another mistake. I wanted it to be a dress pinafore. Check. I wanted the skirt to be flowy....Ugh, not enough fabric. Now it has this weird look (I don't personally like) PLUS, the zipper's crooked. The best zipper I sewed, and it's crooked! =[

Well, off to my next idea:

I finally made a scoodie! I've seen them (a few, not a lot) online, and decided, hood + scarf? That's simple enough! Hahh =]

I made this one from extra fabric I had laying around...Pink butterfly cotton knit fabric with velour. It's reversible!

It was quick and easy to make, so I plan on making more (different fabric, of course) =]

Limited Edition Royal Ninja Collection

Yes, the preview piece! It is a small purse, has two tags (handsewn, handwritten). The outer fabric is yellow cotton with metallic floral detail, and the lining is pale yellow cotton blend. The handles are about 3" in diameter, and the opening is 6" wide. The widest it gets is about 11".

This is a tote bag, with a diagonal pocket on the front (with my ninja logo!) It's pale yellow cotton blend, and the lining is purple cotton blend.

This is the first of the A-line purses. I think I love making these =]

This is my favorite, because I think it's the cutest! It's pale yellow cotton blend fabric with purple hearts striped cotton fabric for the lining. It has a line of the heart fabric across the front, with a heart holding it together.

My cousin's idea to put a bow (well, almost) on the front. I asked her what to do with a ring I wanted to use, and this is what she came up with! =] This one also has a tag!

A True Beginning: ShilynJoy Designs

I took a break over the summer, because I was lazy (summer days, you know..) I had to start again, and quickly, because I have to pay for a trip to Europe, with my AP Art History class.

I don't have picture of the first three items, but I'll explain them anyway.
1. Tunic dress; "Shrimp" colored with a "Garnet" colored stripe down the middle, a garnet band at the bottom, and garnet colored straps.
2. A matching garnet shrug to go with the aforementioned product. It's long sleeved, and the front section goes above the bust, so it shows some skin when worn with the tunic dress.
3. A tunic top; Also "shrimp" and "garnet" colored. The front is shrimp colored with a diagonal garnet triangle coming from the shoulder, which ends at the back. It's sleeveless, reminiscent of the Chinese Qi Pao (Cheongsam), with a garnet neckline, which is adjustable (can be tied), because of D-rings.

I also made this shirt last weekend. Apparently, it's called a "faux shrug", but I call it a "peek-a-boo" shirt. It is cotton knit, butterfly fabric.

This past weekend, I made another shirt, from the same fabric. It's sort of a turtleneck, but it's loose, so it's a bit like a cowl neck?

Anyone know of etsy? I might start selling there, once I get my sewing under control (meaning, efficient and consistent).

First Sale

I finally made my first skirt, with the help of my mom (pleats = a pain!), and tomorrow I'm making one for my friend (almost all by myself, haha). She's only paying for the fabric, because she does my hair. I don't get a profit, but it's a start! My only issue is that my mom doesn't seem to trust me with the sewing machine, and still tries to make things more complicated. She claims "the old way is always better." Not always, but I guess learning both ways is fine...for now.

I have no pictures, but I've been addicted to this site lately!

Birthday!

I just received the nicest things from my boyfriend!
He gave me a dozen yellow roses (because I told him that yellow roses were pretty, NOT because it means friendship). He actually remembered that I had told him I liked them, and that was probably a year ago!!

Then, there were Dove chocolates (yum!) with a blue bow (cute!) and Hershey's kisses with a red bow. And a candle that smelled so good (it says apricots and mangoes). Oh! And a jewelry box; I lost a pair of earrings he bought me last Valentine's day =[ but he gave me another pair on Christmas and this past Valentine's day....So, obviously, I can't lose these!

I love him so much =]
I'm buying him this watch for our 2 year anniversary in a week.

DNA Project

I finished my DNA project, which is supposed to show Protein Synthesis. It took a while, and I'm not exactly proud of it. I think it's because I wanted my vest to look completely different, and my mom ended up making most of it...At least I made the purse, and my friends wanna buy one from me! (I'm proud of that! Especially since it's my first purse that I made...I made a messenger bag for my boyfriend, and a tote bag for my friend before...)

I'm not gonna explain the whole project; I'm gonna say that the vest is the nucleus, with DNA at the zipper...and the purse is the ribosome, where proteins are made.
I hope I win for most creative!

I made this, seeing many people (crafty people, specifically) on here. I figured I might as well show off my awesomeness (HAH!) Eventually, I'll make this ..something. Just watch and see =]
Anyway, I've been looking through business advice for my boyfriend, because he's also interested in a real business (selling shirts with his designs on them). I showed him Threadless, thinking he'll want to start small (if you consider $12500 on one shirt "small") with advice and all. The problem: copyright.
